Perhaps the most innovative and practical addition to mass
spectrometry since the development of MS/MS has been that of ion
mobility spectrometry (IMS). While ion mobility measures the size/z of
an ion, mass spectrometry measures the m/z of an ion. When these
two quantities are combined, a unique qualitative measurement of ion
density can be determined and used to improve the identification of
unknown ions in complex mixtures.

This talk will delineate the early research in IMS and IMMS, discussing
the development of high resolution IMS, time dispersive IMS,
electrospray IMS and drift gas selective IMS, focusing on their
implementation to mass spectrometry. It will provide examples of
IMMS for the analysis of complex mixtures such as proteins, peptides,
metabolites and glycans. Finally, it will present recent research at
Washington State University into time dispersive IMS, drift gas
selectivity, drift tube designs and ionization sources that should lead to
new developments in practical analytical IMMS.
