The term “contemporary materials” covers a wide range of articles of everyday use, for
example food contact materials, body contact materials, toys, furniture, products for
personal care, cleaning agents. The analysis of contemporary materials has, thus, to
deal with a lot of different sample matrices. Plastics account for a great share of
samples. Textile fibres, metals, paper, leather and various mixtures of two or more
substances complete the spectrum of sample matrices.
The analytes of interest in contemporary materials are as diverse as the samples
themselves. There are pure elements like cadmium or lead in plastics and jewellery or
lipophilic organic substances like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in articles made of
plasticised materials. Besides stable substances, analytes like chromium (VI) or paminoazobenzene
are susceptible to changes in the oxidation status or cleavage under
certain conditions [1, 2]. In some cases the legal restrictions cover not only a single
substance but a whole group of analytes, for example nonylphenol ethoxylates.
The valid analysis of the great variety of analytes in the different types of sample
matrices requires a wide spectrum of analytical methods ranging from simple
techniques like titration to highly elaborate techniques like chromatography or ICP
coupled to mass spectrometry. The scope of the analysis is the determination of both
the substance content in the sample and the migration of the analyte into different test
fluids, for example saliva or perspiration simulant.
Most threshold values for body contact materials concern the substance amount. The
regulation of the migration rate is more common in food contact materials or toys.
Additionally, the migration rate is essential in all different types of contemporary
materials for the toxicological assessment of high substance amounts. In any case, the
election of migration conditions and procedures as realistic as possible poses a great
challenge and offers lots of research opportunities.
