Risk assessment for chemical compounds in consumer products requires knowledge about the presence of these compounds, their toxicological properties and finally on the realistic exposure of consumers when using the products. Modern analytical techniques are used for both: for the identification of hazardous chemicals in consumer products and also for the estimation of exposure data using models for realistic exposure scenarios.
This presentation is intended to provide an impression of how challenging the analysis of consumer products can be. This is caused by the variety of matrices and large number of relevant analytes. As representative examples of high practical impact the identification of pigments in tattoo inks by pyrolysis-GC/MS [1], the identification of allergenic fragrances in toys including the characterization of their emission properties by emission chamber experiments [2] and investigations on the release of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from PAH-containing consumer products with skin contact into ex-vivo human skin and liquid simulants with GC-MS/MS-detection [3] will be discussed in detail.
