Polycondensate type polymers such as polyesters are increasingly used as food contact materials. During the polymerization or through post-production degradation processes oligomers which consist of a few monomeric units can be formed. Present in plastic food contact materials the low molecular weight fraction of oligomers (< 1000 Da) can potentially migrate into the packed food or beverages.

Oligomers are not explicitly listed in EU Regulation 10/2011 but need to be analysed and quantified to enable evaluation whether their migration potential is in compliance with the general article 3 of the EU Framework Regulation 1935/2004. Moreover, recent EFSA opinions and amendments of EU 10/2011 take oligomer migration into account and set specific oligomer migration limits. Often oligomers are classified into the group of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) but since they are unavoidably formed they should be regarded as polymer specific accompanying substances. Due to the growing number of (co)monomers in the EU positive list the number and diversity of oligomers to be evaluated is likely to grow as well. Therefore, analytical methods for identification and quantification of oligomers as well as pragmatic approaches for migration estimation are needed. Knowledge of their diffusion characteristics in the polymer would further simplify risk assessment with the help of modeling tools.

High resolution mass spectrometry is one of the most sensitive detection methods available and the technique of choice for identification of polyester related oligomers at low quantification limits. It has to be considered that different substances produce different responses due to unequal ionization behaviors. Therefore an adequate standard has to be found or correlation to a more universal detection method like UV or FID may be drawn. Exemplarily the workflow for the identification of oligomers is shown and approaches for quantification presented. Diffusion coefficients for oligomers from polyesters have been determined experimentally which help to evaluate current migration models and support their applicability to oligomers.
