Lecture

This lecture shows the efforts to date in the Federal Republic of Germany, but also
in the German-speaking countries, to find and establish a suitable standardization
of the analyte names for the long-term storage of laboratory results or laboratory
data.
This is complemented by the goal of the standardized exchange of laboratory data
between the physicians' systems of doctors in private practice, hospitals and
medical laboratories.
It will deal with the previous history of laboratory data processing in Germany and
the existing international standards LOINC and SNOMED CT and the experience
from other countries such as Switzerland or Austria will also be considered.
Key drivers for these developments include patient safety, public and private
interest in laboratory results, accessibility of information about laboratory testing
and their use over the Internet (Dr.Google), and recurring uncertainty about the
safety and reliability of laboratory results. All this illustrates the pressure for
standardization and for the distinctness of laboratory results in their consideration,
even over a long period of time. This pressure is intensified by the increasing
access to laboratory medical examinations without medical supervision, the low
transparency with regard to the test contents and the lack of experience of the
supervisors with the intrinsic nature of laboratory medicine and the incongruence
regarding monitoring and approval of laboratory medical examination procedures.
The standardization of the analysis names is therefore at the heart of the
considerations on the comparability of analysis results and their subsequent
evaluation for the well-being of the patient.
