EU legislation ensures high level of protection for the health and safety of consumers by means of strict common safety rules and standards for products and services circulating within the internal market.

Development and validation of  testing methods and scientific guidance for the chemical safety of non-food consumer products (e.g. household products, childcare articles, textiles, toys..) are  tools needed for ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and monitoring health-relevant chemicals. The presentation will illustrate examples of certain product categories (e.g. toys, childcare articles) and substances (e.g. PAHs)

EU legislation ensures high level of protection for the health and safety of consumers by means of strict common safety rules and standards for products/services circulating within the internal market. Development/validation of testing methods and scientific guidance for the chemical safety of non-food consumer products (e.g. household products, childcare articles, toys..) are tools needed to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and monitoring health-relevant chemicals.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a ubiquitous group of numerous chemically related substances many of which are known carcinogens. To limit human exposure there are several pieces of EU legislation which already limit their presence in certain food products, in water and in ambient air. Under the REACH regulation EC 1907/2006 Annex XVII, Entry 50, eight PAHs have long been restricted in extender oils used in tires. Although no added deliberately to consumer products, PAHs can still be present as impurities. Regulation EU 1272/2013 establishes for the eight priority PAHs content limits of 0.5 mg kg-1 and 1 mg kg-1 for plastic and rubber components of toys/childcare articles and for all other consumer articles in direct and prolonged or short-term repetitive contact with the skin or oral cavity. [1, 2].

Methods/standards enabling the analytical determination of the individual concentration of these eight PAHs in plastic/rubber are required for the verification of the limit-values. Currently no harmonised European or International standard is available. The main aim of the work was the development of a simple and fast method for the determination of the eight priority PAHs in rubber and plastic materials, taken as basis existing methods. The use of Randall hot extraction of the rubber or plastic material followed by sample extract clean-up with cartridges based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and analysis with GC-MS in selected ion mode will be presented.
