The introduction of smart networked process sensors will transform a production line into a data intensive environment. As a consequence, control and other forms of interaction become more data based in the first instance. The promises range from process optimization and quality control, new process insights, up to novel online business models democratizing various analytics services. This development requires more data handling and deeper information know-how. The expected massive amount of data calls for Big Data approaches.

This talk presents an introduction to approaches, technologies and architectures one often hears when talking about Big Data. We will further critically discuss the saying “the more data, the better” inherently associated with Big Data. It motivates the currently ongoing evolution from Big Data to Smart Data. Instead of Big Data’s often referred technical implementation focus, Smart Data considers data value as a first-class citizen. The analysis of previously collected big data may direct the efforts in achieving the value propositions when implementing process sensors. We are convinced, the use of Big Data to pave the way to Smart Data solutions presents an important
approach for driving on the VDI process sensors roadmap.

Finally, we will talk about a laboratory example from the Process Analysis and Technology (PA&T) research center at the Reutlingen University, where we tracked manual analytics process activities using data traces from various devices. This use case provides some data based insights which could be further amplified and exploited by networked process sensors. The talk concludes with an evaluation of our first experiences. It lists some challenges to be solved as next steps activities.
