In the course of the digitalization of the process industry, the fusion of the physical and virtual world is in rapid progress. A comprehensive infrastructure for chemical analysis together with powerful data analysis and model maintenance will help to optimize both the plants and the systems, thus enabling faster product and raw material changes.

The horizontal supply chain begins with the raw materials, which are processed during production into high-quality products according to customer specifications. The vertical plant lifecycle starts with customer requirements, which are translated by R&D and engineering into products and processes and later into optimized production. Today, the analytical product and process knowledge is distributed over separately located laboratories and specialist departments, such as research laboratories, incoming goods inspection, quality assurance, laboratories in the production process or for product and process development.

The digitisation of the laboratory infrastructure has a particularly strong leverage effect to achieve digitisation-based knowledge management across all value chains. This requires "smart features" of laboratory equipment and laboratory infrastructure.

Dr. habil. Michael Maiwald

Dr. Michael Maiwald is head of the division Process Analytical Technology at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin, Germany. He is physico-chemist and graduated from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, in 1994. In 2012 his habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) followed at Technical University Kaiserslautern, Germany. Previously, he was research associate and group leader at central services analytics at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

His research activities are in the field of quantitative online NMR spectroscopy, other analytical online methods, chemometrics, and sensor automation concepts. He works actively in different industrial, scientific, and standardization working groups.
